If you have ever whispered why did my child die, into the dark, you already know that no explanation has ever made it hurt less.
You have heard them all by now.
They’re in a better place. Everything happens for a reason. At least you have other children.
The words are meant to help. But they land somewhere off to the side of the real wound, and they leave you feeling more alone than before they were spoken.
I want to sit with you in that place today — the place where all the answers run out.
Because I have stood there too.
Just days after Andrew went to heaven, someone came to me.
I truly believe she meant well. I think her heart was in the right place.
I was pouring my heart out. The tears were streaming down my face. And I was in that place we all know, where the only word you can find is why.
Why did this happen? Why my son? Why.
And she looked right at me, and she said, “Maybe the better question to ask is, why not me?”
She was standing there with all of her children intact.
I said nothing. I was in too much shock to speak.
To this day, I don’t think she knows how deeply those words cut. I don’t think she meant to wound me at all. She was reaching for wisdom — and in that moment, it was painful.
It cut me to my core.
There is a man in Scripture who knew that exhaustion better than anyone. His name was Job.
Job lost everything. His wealth, his health, and all ten of his children — in a single day.
And his three friends came to him.
Here is the part I never want you to miss. As long as they stayed silent, they got it right. Seven days and seven nights they sat with him on the ground, and no one said a word, because they saw how deep his suffering was.
Seven days of presence. That was the most right they ever got it.
And then they opened their mouths.
Chapter after chapter, they tried to explain his suffering. They offered the finest human wisdom available. And at the very end of the book, God Himself says they were wrong.
The smartest answers in the room could not touch catastrophic loss.
Not because those friends were cruel. But because the answer was never theirs to give.
It lives in the wisdom of God alone.
Here is what I held onto. And I said these words out loud, very loud, in my own grief.
God listened for thirty-seven chapters before He ever said a word.
Thirty-seven chapters of Job crying out why. Thirty-seven chapters of the friends and their answers. And God let it all be spoken. He was not in a hurry to explain Himself.
And then, finally, God spoke.
“Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind.” (Job 38:1, NLT)
And in everything He said, He never once answered the why.
Not one time did God give Job the reason.
But by the end, listen to what Job says:
“I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes.” (Job 42:5, NLT)
Job didn’t say, now I understand why. He said, now I have seen You.
He finally knew God. Not the rumor of God his friends kept quoting. Not the God of secondhand wisdom. He knew God for himself — because God came near in his suffering.
That is the answer the world could never give.
The secret to surviving the loss of a child was never going to be a good enough explanation.
It’s knowing Him.
Let me take this one layer deeper, because I do not want you to hear me wrong.
You are made of three parts — body, soul, and spirit. And grief touches all three.
So go get the counselor. Get everything research has proven helps a grieving mom. That is wisdom too, and God is not against it.
But do not tend the body and the soul and leave your spirit starving.
You were made for all three. And grief that ignores the spirit will never reach the place that actually hurts.
There is a quiet warning underneath all of it, too.
When the pain is this big, we get hungry for relief. Desperate for it. And in that hunger, we will reach for almost anything that takes the edge off.
Without ever deciding to, we can begin trusting the relief more than we trust God.
Your heart was made to worship. It will worship something.
You may never get the why. I still don’t have mine.
Almost eight years, and the explanation never came.
But that was never the promise.
God did not send Job an answer. He came Himself.
And He will come to you, too — not with a reason that finally makes it all make sense, but with His own presence.
Until one day you can say it for yourself: I had only heard about You before. But now I have seen You.
So the next time someone hands you an answer that doesn’t fit — let it go. You don’t have to carry it.
You’re not looking for an answer anymore.
You’re looking for Him.
And He is closer than you think.
If these words have met you where you are today — join me to find what your heart is longing for, something you may not have the words for yet.
🎙 Episode 295: Why Did My Child Die? What Helps When There’s No Answer
In this episode, I sit with you in the place where all the answers run out — through the story of Job, the words that cut me almost eight years ago, and the quiet truth that finally reaches deeper than any explanation ever could.
When you’re ready to touch the spiritual part of what hurts, this is where we do the deeper work together — wrapping the guilt, the fear, and the doubt in truth, facing the hard questions of who you are now, and learning to walk in this unfamiliar life again, all at your own pace.
With care and prayer,
